Dental Assistant Program

Our 9-month hands-on Dental Assistant Program includes the following courses. The program includes preparation for the Dental Support Technician Certification (DSTC) Exam from American Medical Certification Association (AMCA), Job Placement Assistance and Dentrix Software Training.

After completion of the program graduates are qualified to work in any dental office as a front or back-office assistant including all specialties, such as Orthodontics, Oral Surgery, Endodontics, Periodontics, and Pediatrics. There are no additional educational requirements to work as a specialty assistant, however more extensive training in Orthodontics is highly desirable. Our students are thoroughly prepared in all aspects of dentistry.

Course Title: Orientation To Dental Assisting and Dental Office

Orientation to dental assisting the student will learn the roles of the dental team, as well as the dental specialties. This will provide the student with the knowledge of who, why and when to refer a patient, or obtain reports for the dentist. The student will also learn dental law and ethics, as well as the dental assistant’s role in the dental community. This will provide the student with an understanding of what they can or cannot do within their profession.

The dental office student will learn appointment scheduling, office management, patient billing, insurance billing and human relations. The student will then be able to identify patient concerns, communicate with insurance companies and get maximum compensation for the practice.

Course Title: Basic Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Law and Ethics, Dental Pharmacology

Basic Anatomy and Physiology the student will learn common terminology related to dentistry, so they may communicate effectively within the profession. The students will also learn basic body systems and how they relate to dentistry. This will provide the student with the skills to aid the dentist with charting, treatment, and patient education.

Medical Law & Ethics in this course consists of a study of the legal relationship between the doctor and the patient, professional behavior, malpractice, confidentiality, breach of contract and medical practice legislation.

In Dental Pharmacology course, the student will learn about common medications, abbreviations, terminology, and reactions in dental pharmacology. This will provide the student with the knowledge of how to read a prescription, how to administer medication, as well as identify any reactions to medications.

Course Title: Basic Clinical Procedure

The student will learn how to take blood pressure, temperature, and respirations. This will provide the student with the skills necessary to monitor the patient during many procedures. The student will learn infection control, aseptic techniques, and OSHA regulations. This will provide the student with skills to prevent transmission of diseases to their patients as well as to themselves. The student will also learn CPR and other emergency procedures. This will enable the student to react confidently in an emergency. The student will also learn about patient records. The student will also learn how to obtain the history form and organize patient records.

Course Title: Histology and Pathology

The student will learn in detail the oral cavity, numbering of teeth and the tissues surrounding the teeth. This will provide the student with a complete understanding so they may assist the dentist with confidence during procedures, charting and patient education. They will also need this to communicate with the rest of the dental community. Students will learn many common diseases and disorders related to dentistry. This will provide the student with the skills needed to assist the dentist in treating and preventing these conditions.

Course Title: Chair Side Assisting I

The student will learn basic dental procedures, dental instruments and instrument exchange and evacuation systems. This will provide the student with the skills to confidently assist the dentist with all aspects of chair side procedures, including suctioning for the patient and patient care before, during and after a procedure.

Course Title: Chair Side Assisting II

The student will learn procedures, instruments, and techniques for specialized dentistry such as orthodontics (braces and appliances), periodontics (gums) and pediatrics (children). This will provide the student with the skills necessary to acquire a position within a specialty practice.

Course Title: Dental Laboratory Procedures, Career Readiness I and II

The student will learn basic techniques in preparing, repairing and construction of dentures, molds, etc. This will provide the students with the skills needed to work with the dental team in a laboratory setting either in or out of the office.

Career Readiness I course is designed to provide the student with the necessary skills to obtain gainful employment. The student will learn how to write an effective resume. Using the technique of networking the student will learn how to identify appropriate job sources including but not limited to the Internet. The students will focus on the process of interviewing and effective communication skills. The student will identify the characteristics necessary to start and keep a job.

Career Readiness II course is designed to allow the student to apply the skills learned in Career Readiness I. The student will be guided through the resume submission process. Students will also be setting up job interviews, as well as polishing their skills through mock interviews.

Course Title: Externship

Students will gain hands-on experience through an externship. They will use the knowledge and skills they obtained throughout the course of the program to be able to obtain and maintain a position as a Dental Assistant.

What is the Dental Assisting program?

The Dental Assisting Program is a 9-month, full-time day program. The program seeks to provide each student with the essential knowledge and skills necessary to become a vital part of the dental health care team.

The mission of the program is to provide for and support competency-based learning for a multicultural community. The program is committed to excellence in helping to meet the diverse needs of both traditional and nontraditional students. The program seeks to provide each student with the essential knowledge and skills necessary to become a functional dental team member.

What will I learn?

Students will obtain knowledge in specific areas of dentistry to include:

  • assisting the dentist during a variety of treatment procedures
  • asking about the patient’s medical history and taking blood pressure and pulse
  • serving as an infection control officer, developing infection control protocol, and preparing and sterilizing instruments and equipment
  • helping patients feel comfortable before, during, and after dental treatment
  • providing patients with instructions for oral care following surgery or other dental treatment procedures, such as the placement of a restoration (filling)
  • teaching patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health; (e.g., tooth brushing, flossing, and nutritional counseling)
  • taking impressions of patient’s teeth for study casts (models of teeth)
  • performing office management tasks that often require the use of a personal computer
  • communicating with patients and suppliers (e.g., scheduling appointments, answering the telephone, billing, and ordering supplies)
  • helping to provide direct patient care in all dental specialties, including orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, and oral surgery

What can I do with this course of study?

The certificate in dental assisting will allow the student to pursue employment as a dental assistant in a dental office to include general dentistry or a specialty in dentistry. Students graduating from the Dental Assisting program will have the necessary certificates needed to be part of a successful dental team.
